Everyone lives in a watershed. A watershed is the land area that water flows across on its way to a creek, stream, wetland, pond, lake or river. Homes, farms, ranches, forests, small towns and big cities are all found in watersheds. Learn more about Understanding Watersheds (PDF*) and how to Protect Your Watershed (PDF*) from pollution and runoff.

Runoff from landscapes often carries with it fertilizers, pesticides or topsoil. Runoff water enters storm drains and goes directly to lakes, creeks and streams. Preventing stormwater runoff is critical for protecting surface and ground water quality. Rain gardens can catch and hold water, preventing it from becoming runoff. Visit the Rain Gardens Web page to learn more. Find out more ways to protect lakes, ponds, and streams including how to manage toxic algae.
